As you can see from the table above, it's not just supercars and expensive models that can be costly to repair - popular cars like the Audi A1, Ford S-Max and Nissan X-Trail have encountered expensive repair bills.

Half of the repairs in this list were related to engine issues, proving how financially damaging it can be if your car needs to have its engine repaired or replaced.

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE OUT A WARRANTY FOR YOUR CAR?

Buying a car is an expensive purchase - it is likely to be one of the most expensive things you buy in your lifetime - so it makes sense to provide it with some additional cover in case it goes wrong.

For example, when you buy a new household appliance, like a fridge or an oven, you're asked if you want to add a warranty to the product to protect yourself if it breaks down as it gets older and parts start to get worn.

Lawrence Whittaker, Warrantywise Chief Executive, said "all cars have the potential to go wrong [...] if your car goes wrong, the chances are you'll be met with an expensive repair bill, and it's not just supercars that are expensive to repair".

As a used car gets older, so does its original parts. It's not uncommon for them to wear unevenly and quicker than expected. Having a warranty in place gives you security against paying for expensive issues with parts including the engine, clutch and gearbox.

For a small monthly fee, or a couple of hundred pounds outright, you can ensure that your car is protected against parts unexpectedly breaking down and that you're covered from having to pay out for the potentially hefty repairs.
